Challenge

Initially built as part of the COVID-19 Hackathon initiative, our team implement a scalable and referenceable identification for timely intervention in an ICU setting. We won the Best Implementation and Highest Relevance award competing against 13 global teams.

As the Pandemic started to lay unscalable stress on healthcare system, one of the most acutely concerning items were COVID-19 units with limited availability of vents for patients severely needing them. One of the symptoms is overreaction of our immune system and inflammation occurs by augmentation of cytokines, also referred to as ‘Cytokine Storm’ (CS). This situation can seriously harm tissues and organs with a ripened challenge to speed up ideas and concepts to intervene before it becomes too late to direct patients to other critical care.

Our Approach

We proposed to build a solution that could accurately identify and predict the onset of the Cytokine Storm. Similar to the way early warning systems forecast the emergence of a storm to alert a catastrophe. The COVID patients early detection that the body is going into severe cause that it might not be able to counter itself without proactive intervention. The Hackathon entry was built using the MIMIC-IV dataset on ICU patients. The model is built to forecast CS at least 6-12 hours in advance; thus, advanced provisions can be made which are vital given potential short window of time to intervene.

Results

We won 1st place on the hackathon, which helped us create its rivels in many organizations for which our big data platform company offered a comprehensive solution using their platform and consulting services to the newly acquired customers.

Business Value

This terminal work & win laid the basis for our big data platform provider to engage in multiple consulting work with a multitude of customers. Two large scale deals that ensued because of the business value seen in the various engagements showcasing the powerful scalable platform that could deliver real business value were worth with 100s of millions of dollars of revenue.
